Understand the Assisted Reproductive Techniques Better

The Assisted Reproductive Techniques are a popular choice for the modern couple who postpone conception owing to pressures of career and financial security. When it is time to raise a family, age factor sets in causing delays and hindrances in the conception process. The couple then decides to utilise the assisted reproductive method. But, before deciding on any of the artificial methods of conception, the couple must research and understand what happens in the said technique and what are the consequences of such a technique on the partner.

Even if the problem is present with the male fertility, the woman has to undergo hormonal treatments which affect her natural cycle and egg-producing capacity. Nature has created a woman’s body to produce a healthy egg each month during the cycle. An assisted reproductive technique such as the ICSI artificially promotes the growth and release of 10 or more eggs in each cycle. This excess dosage to induce growth of more than one egg is the reason women become prone to uterine cancer, ovarian and cervical cancer in the future.

The question then arises whether the eggs generated in an artificial manner are healthy for conception. The ICSI method extracts a healthy sperm from the male and inserts them into a chosen egg which is deemed healthier than the rest of the artificially generated eggs for that cycle. This method does not guarantee fertilisation, which again has to occur naturally at the basic cell level. Since the health of sperm and eggs do not match the quality of the naturally generated sperms and eggs, abortions and miscarriage risks are multiplied. It is said that only about 20 to 35% of the cases which opt the IVF/ICSI technique observe successful conception. This does not necessarily mean that the couples who fall into the 65 to 80% category cannot conceive. Natural conception is always the best method for conceiving and delivering a healthy baby.

• If a couple has concerns which do not let them start a family in their fertile age, they should take precautions to maintain their fertility.

• Checking for the partner who has infertility solves the half of the problems. Once the problem is identified, natural methods to rectify the condition must be sought.

• Most cases of infertility in couples are stress-induced or STI triggered conditions. Hence, it is important that the couple maintains a healthy lifestyle, food habit, and exercise timetable to ward off unexplained infertility.
