Ayurvedic Infertility treatment principles

Infertility, according to Ayurveda refers to that woman of reproductive age to be biological deprived of conception. It also includes the state of woman not in a position to bear pregnancy throughout its entire stage. According to modern science, infertility is stated to be the failure on the part of the woman to conceive, even after having regular intercourse for a year without using contraception.

Infertility problem, however, is fairly common these days. There is a genuine need to identify the best available solution that is both affordable and less complicated. The ancient literature ‘Atharvaveda’ explores very clearly the Ayurvedic background to treat infertility and its significance.

Ama Pachana and Agni Deepana: Agni (digestion power) imbalance causes development of different types of diseases due to formation of Ama (toxins generated when stomach has undigested food in it). Ama treatment becomes essential and this automatically includes Agni treatment, including using carminative and digestive Ayurvedic formulations, combined with balanced meals taken during appropriate time and schedule. With Ayurvedic Panchakarma treatment, ama can be successfully eliminated and Agni issues rectified. Healthy Ojas can be enjoyed only by having healthy Agni.

Vatanulomana: Vata is stated to be the main dosha causing infertility. Hence, to treat infertility, Vatanulomana (rectifying Vata functions is crucial). Ayurvedic formulations that follow strict diet schedule and routine exercises are necessary in Vatanulomana.

Sodhana: Before sodhana, there needs to be performed appropriate sneha-swedas. Treatment modalities such as Virechana (puragation), Vamana (emesis), Utharavasti (special enema) and Vasti (medicated enema) is administered through vaginal or urethral routes, depending upon the patient’s health condition and specific requirements. Peyadi Krama (after Sodhana, there is to be followed strict dietary regimen) is to be practiced by the patient. Through this detoxification therapy, toxins can be effectively expelled from the body. Such therapies do help to rectify the uterine, tubular and ovarian problems, considered to be the causes of infertility.

Impurities and tensions are removed from the body successfully with Ayurvedic treatments. They also help to nourish the whole, body, provide strength to the immune system and revitalize the mind. They also are found beneficial to nourish all dhatus present in the body, reduce stress and pacify Vata.
