Infertility Based On Ayurveda

Ayurveda states infertility is the biological inability of a woman in the reproductive age to contribute to conception and the women’s inability to carry pregnancy to full term. Infertility leads to the failure in conceiving after one year of regular intercourse without contraception, based on modern science.

Infertility problem is more common these days and needs the solution to have little complications and must be affordable.

Infertility is caused due to female or male factors. The causes for women’s infertility are tubal factors, ovarian factors, age-related factors, PCOS, uterine problems and endometriosis.

Menstrual cycle is affected by emotional instability, diet, lifestyle, excessive physical exercise and stress that cause imbalance in Doshas (controlling the activities of Pitta, Vata and Kapha). Male infertility is affected by sperm production or sperm transport that has varicocele, ejaculation problems, infections, hormone imbalances, tumours, defects of tubules in sperm transport.

Ayurveda mentions the main cause of abnormal body function is agnimandya (vitiation of digestive fire in the body) and tridosha dusti (vitation of three main governing factors of the body).

Infertility Management In Ayurveda

Ayurveda strengthens the body’s self-healing and balances mechanisms that don’t rely on the intervention of foreign substances to replace the hormones of the body. This focuses on infertility treatment that improves the overall health and quality of individuals.

Dietary Management

Diet plays the essential role to prevent or cure diseases and maintain good health. Food is compared to God as per the ancient Indian scriptures, which is the main factor to sustain and nourish life.

Dietary management implements strict compliance and adherence to foods to increase Ojas (the intersection factor of mental, physical, and spiritual health of the body, that is responsible for energy, health and liveliness) and avoiding the substances that diminish Ojas.

It is essential to regulate ovulation and enhance fertilization. Consuming whole foods gives nutrients to the body along with the fibers to influence the hormonal levels of the body. Foods that have excess starch, processed carbohydrates, hormone and antibiotics laden milk and meat and canned produce can destroy fertility.

Ojas building foods like ghee, milk, nuts, dates, sesame seeds, honey, pumpkin seeds, avocados, saffron, fresh organic vegetables and fruits, protein from peas, beans, whole grains, spices like turmeric, ajwain powder, cumin and black cumin can boost fertility.

Diets must have zero trans-fats as they threaten fertility, block arteries, and harm blood vessels and heart, so trans-fats are to be avoided. Foods that have preservatives, chemicals and artificial sweeteners like Monosodium Glutamate, fat rich diet, coloring, artificial flavouring, excess caffeine and alcohol, smoking, soda, tobacco, refined carbohydrates, red meat, white bread, pasta and rice can exacerbate the problems in infertility.

Treating Infertility Using Ayurveda

Ama pachana and Agni deepana

The ama formation happens due to the imbalances in Agni, that’s the main cause of several diseases. So, for treating Ama it’s best to treat Agni first, the appropriate use of carminative and digestive Ayurvedic formulations to take meals at the right time.

Ayurvedic Panchakarma treatments can eliminate Ama and correct Agni. If the Agni is healthy, it’ll contribute to healthy Ojas. Doshas involved in infertility are Vata. Hence, Vatanulomana is essential to treat infertility.

Ayurvedic formulations, strict diet and routine exercises can help with Vatanulomana. Some sneha-swedas are done before performing sodhana.

Treatment modalities such as Virechana (purgation), Vamana (emesis), Utharavasti and Vasti (medicated enema) are administered through vaginal routes or urethra as per the patient’s condition. Patient’s must follow peyadi krama soon after Sodhana.

Detoxification therapy helps in expulsion of toxins out of the body. Therapies can correct uterine, ovarian and tubular problems that cause infertility.

Ayurvedic treatments release tension and excretes impurities from the body. It revitalizes the mind, nourishes the body and strengthens the immune system. These can be beneficial to reduce stress, pacify Vata and nourish all dhatus of the body.
