Ayurvedic Treatment for Herpes Simplex Infections
Infections may appear in the genitals, face mouth, anal and buttocks region due to Herpes simplex virus. The other term used for Herpes simplex lesions is cold sores. Herpes virus is said to be dormant in the nerve ganglia after initial infection and gets reactivated due to stress, infections, skin trauma, immune system changes and ultraviolet radiation exposure. The common symptoms are appearance of blisters on red base with pain, itching, swollen lymph glands and fever. Blisters collapse and form ulcers and heals within 7-10 days.
To treat herpes, Ayurveda is used which aims towards providing treatment to the local symptoms, to prevent its recurrence. The local application is created from ointments and oils comprising of medicines like Saariva (Hemidesmus indicus), Manjishtha (Rubia cordifolia), Haridra (Curcuma longa), Chandan (Santalum album), Yashtimadhuk (Glycerrhiza glabra), Mandukparni (Centella asiatica). Daruharidra (Berberis aristata), along with Yashtimadhuk-Ghrut, Panch-Tikta-Ghrut, Shatadhout-Ghrut and Jatyadi oil.
There are medicines that are used for 2-3 weeks internally until ulcers and blisters are eliminated. They are Panch-Tikta-Ghrut-Guggulu, Kaishor-Guggulu, Ekang-Veer-Ras, Sinhanaad-Guggulu, Bhumiamalaki (Phyllanthus niruri), Sutshekhar-Ras, Yashtimadhuk, Praval-Bhasma, Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum), Usheer (Vetiveria zizanioidis), Chandan and Chandrakala-Ras. In case, additional recurrence is noticed within 6 months, then the body’s immune system is boosted with additional medicines like Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus), Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Abhrak-Bhasma, Bala (Sida cordifolia), Suvarna-Bhasma, Suvarna-Malini-Vasant, Trivang-Bhasma and Naagbala (Grewia hirsuta).
Precipitating factors like stress and sunburns are better avoided to prevent recurrence. Lesions are contagious. Active blisters such as sores can be transmitted by the affected person in the form of saliva. Hence, physical contact is to be avoided until complete healing of lesions.
