It could be that you have contracted herpes and is eager to get sexually active with someone recently you have befriended with. But you need to be honest and educate the person about the infection. Even if it is a dormant virus and no open sores exist, there are still chances to spread this infection. Be calm and prepared to answer all questions. Make sure to keep your words clear and simple.

With time, you get to know the disease better, thus making it easy to tell your new partner. Herpes will not affect your sex lives and intimate relationships although it is feared. Sexually transmitted diseases might occur due to unprotected sex. Sexual activities are considered to be the main reason behind the spread of sexually transmitted diseases.

Practice safe sex

Use a condom when indulging in sex. They are easily available at almost every medical store and offer barrier while having sex. Latex condom helps stay safe against all sexually transmitted diseases. But it is not 100% safe for STDs. Use the condom properly. Condom failures are more due to human errors than manufacturing mistakes. For every sexual act, use new condom. Ensure it does not get damaged by any sharp objects including teeth or fingernails.

Other aspects to consider

Along with latex condoms, use water-based lubricants only. During intercourse, adequate lubrication is essential. All STDs are not test screened. It is only a few that require Pap smear and vaginal exam while others need just urine or blood test. Negative test might not mean not having contracted the disease. For example, Chlamydia might travel into the reproductive tract. Perhaps, your body does not have sufficient amount of antibodies to enable virus like HPV or HIV to show up in the blood test.

Even if you are into non-monogamous relationship or doubt your partner’s fidelity, it will be better to avail regular STD test, if sexually active. Get tested at the community clinic, health department, Planned Parenthood or private physician. Some STDs might involve some symptoms like ulcers, sores or discharge while most may not display symptoms.

Do not allow ignorance, embarrassment or fear to cause health issues in the future. Adolescents face more STD issues and hence, should be concerned about. It is the duty of the parents to be a role model and ensure clear communication. Discuss with your children about sexual issues. This will help your child to open up and delay their initial sexual experiences. It will also enable them to stay protected against diseases and untimely pregnancy. Unfortunately, no known ‘cure’ exists for herpes. So take extreme precaution and change your lifestyle!
