Is Absent Sexual Desire a Sign of Serious Disorder in Women?

It is common for women to lose interest in sex after few years into the marriage. The duration after which this loss of interest begins may vary. The desire to skip the sexual act may arise due to many factors. The loss of sexual desire as a result of fatigue caused due to caring for young one is not a serious concern. It is a temporary stage which will pass as the young one grows and the woman finds some time to relax.

A scenario where a woman does not want to indulge in any forms of the sexual acts consistently may be termed as a sexual disorder. It is commonly named as the hypoactive disorder. A recent study by a medical institute covering more than 1200 women observed that 11% had the hypoactive sexual disorder.

The Causes

Hypoactive sexual disorder may be caused due to physical and psychological reasons. The physical reasons may include the poor choice of food intake, weight issues, surgeries, or medication side effects. The psychological reasons may be related to issues like depression, anxiety, stress, sexual trauma in the past, etc., these are serious concerns which must be treated with appropriate modes of treatment.

Some physical causes

The list of the physical causes is not exhaustive but covers the majority of the reasons.

  • Women who diet too much and are lean or are underweight may face issues with sexual desire. If the diet is devoid of fats, and carbohydrates the sexual desire will eventually suffer.

  • Obesity, cholesterol related conditions, surgeries or a bad lifestyle causing hormonal imbalance are few other factors affecting the sexual desire in women.

  • Any hormonal imbalance may affect the sexual well being and deteriorate the sexual desire. Women who suffer from PCOS, Hypothyroidism or, from the side effects of medications like the contraceptive pills may want to abstain from sexual acts.

  • Menopause in women is also known to lower the sex drive.

Psychological reasons

Once the reason for the lowered sex drive is ascertained to be an emotional cause, expert diagnose must be sought at the earliest. It is important that the emotional imbalance causing the disorder is treated to immediately.

  • Going through excessive stress and anxiety.

  • Marital discord, painful intercourse, trauma in the past, etc are few other reasons which cause a loss of libido in women.

  • Lower self-esteem, going through depression may contribute to the loss of libido in women.
