Dosha Approach to Treat Genital Herpes

The Ayurveda mentions three energetic forces named Doshas governing the functioning of the body. The Vata controls the ears, skin, bones intestines and lumbar region. Pitta governs the functioning of the skin, eyes, blood, lymph, sweat, stomach and the umbilicus. Kapha governs the functioning of organs in the head, nose, tongue, neck, chest, body fat and stomach.

Genital Herpes or the HSV virus comes in two different variants HSV-1 and  HSV-2. HSV-1 causes oral herpes while HSV-2 causes genital herpes. The Ayurveda mentions the body fire or Agni which maintains the balance between the Doshas. Untimely and unhealthy eating habits cause disrupted Agni thereby vitiating the Doshas and hence lowering the body immunity.

Lowered immunity is the main cause of contracting HSV virus infection. This infection spreads to sexual(genital) contact with an infected partner.

The imbalanced doshas bring about changes in the lymph, blood, muscle and skin health of a person during the infection causing fever, itching, pain, and skin eruptions. Once the virus enters the body, it uses the body fluids and nerve path for its transportation and invasion to the other organs like urethra and the mouth. Recurrence of the herpes infection is usually caused due to vitiated Vata.

To balance the vitiated Dosha, one should

  • Include immunity building foods like Pomegranate, honey, Raisins and dates in the diet.
  • Avoid consuming meat, fried food, spicy and sour food.
  • Avoid workouts after meal or bathing soon after outdoor activity.
  • Avoid use of steroids.
  • Manage the stress and anxiety effectively.
