Menopausal side effects may cause bleeding after sex. It can also be sign of some serious condition, which requires immediate medical attention. Bleeding taking place in Vagina after sex is termed as postcoital bleeding, for which the causes cited are:

Cervicitis or Cervical inflammation: It might be due to sexually transmitted infection requiring treatment like gonorrhea or Chlamydia or can be totally harmless and ongoing.

Vaginal dryness: Body hormones might experience changes during menopause. Also decreases estrogen level, thus leading to reduction in vaginal fluid. This decease experienced during sex tends to cause dryness, which in turn results in friction, thereby irritating the tissues lining the vagina and causing extreme pain. Using water soluble lubricant can help alleviate the condition.

Cervical polyp: These are termed to be growths about 1 to 2 cm in size and occur on cervix at the meeting place of the vagina. However, most are found to be non-cancerous in nature. The OB/Gyn can eliminate such issues.

Normal uterine bleeding: It might take place immediately before or after the period. Light bleeding is not unusual and it could appear as spotting.

Cancer: It might involve the uterus, cervix or the vagina. The medical practitioner will prescribe regular pelvic and pap smear exams to ensure that cancer, if affected, is detected at an earlier stage.

Most of the causes are found to be harmless and do not require any form of treatment. But, at times, bleeding in the vagina after having sex might be sign of some serious issues.
