What is Peyronie’s Disease?

Peyronie’s is a disease in which scar tissue in the penis makes it bend, curve, or get shorter or thinner. As scar tissue grows, you may be able to feel the scar tissue (plaque) through your skin, or you may feel pain in a certain part of your penis. Depending on where the scar is, your penis can bend up, down, or to the side when you have an erection. Some guys with this condition don’t have a curve, but they may have a flat spot or an “hourglass” shape.

Most guys do not have erections that are perfectly straight. You don’t have Peyronie’s disease just because your penis is a little bit curved. Peyronie’s disease does not affect men who have always had a curve.

Difference between Peyronie’s Disease and Penile Curvature

Adults can get Peyronie’s disease, which is a type of penile curve. Some men are born with a curved penile, which is called chordee or genetic curvature. It isn’t caused by scar tissue, and it doesn’t get better or worse over time. It might not be clear until a man starts getting erections more often after puberty.

Symptoms of Peyronie’s Disease

The penis bends a lot, either sideways, down, or up, depending on where the plaques are. This is the main sign of erectile dysfunction.

  • Plaques – scar tissue that can be felt under the penis’s skin. It feels like a band of tough muscle. For some, they may feel like flattened lumps.
  • Erectile dysfunction – Men with Peyronie’s disease may find it hard to get or keep an erection going.
  • Length of the penis – Peyronie’s disease can cause the penis to get shorter over time.
  • Pain – People may feel pain when they have an erection or when they are orgasming. But in most cases, this goes away on its own after a few months (even if nothing is done).

Does Peyronie’s Disease Hurt?

Yes, it can hurt to have Peyronie’s disease. This happens most often when the disease is in its early, or acute, stage. But pain may still happen with erections, even in the long-term phase. It hurts different people in different ways.

How Does the Penis Work?

Your penis does two things: it holds pee and sperm. It has three tubes inside: the urethra, which carries urine from the bladder to the penis, and the corpora cavernosa, which are two tubes that fill with blood to make the penis stand up. All three are held together by the tunica albuginea, a tough sheath made of fibers. When you’re making love, the blood flowing to your penis makes it straight, stiff, hard, and able to enter. After an orgasm, the sperm leave the body through the urethra. Ejaculation is the name for this action.

Peyronie’s disease changes how the penis looks and how big it is, but it doesn’t affect peeing or ejaculation.

Lifestyle Changes

If you change the way you live, you might be less likely to have ED because of Peyronie’s disease. These things are:

  • Quitting smoking
  • Getting people to drink less alcohol
  • Stopping drug misuse
  • Exercising regularly
