Premature Ejaculation: An Introduction and its causes

Premature ejaculation (PE) is also referred to as involuntary ejaculation. It occurs whenever you reach orgasm prior to your desire or intention. According to studies conducted, on an average, it takes around 5 to 10 minutes to reach ejaculation right from the time you get aroused. However, it becomes irrelevant if both the partners feel satisfied with their existing sexual relationship. But, if your partner decides to stay erect for long than usual, then PE is likely to become a grave problem. For the relationship, this situation can be really frustrating. Currently, PE has posed to be a common problem, with over 70% of men across the globe suffering from this particular sexual condition. Few men are even not aware of their having this issue. It could be because, their partners may not be discussing about it.

Pre-ejaculation causes

Generally, PE is considered to be a temporary condition affecting mostly very young or inexperienced men or those who are in their initial relationship phase. Majority of the cases reported are due to excitement, performance anxiety or stress. During youth, the person may have developed the habit to climax quickly, which may perhaps persist even at a later stage in life. At times, physical conditions like multiple sclerosis, extreme penile sensitivity, neurological troubles or damaged nerves may cause premature ejaculation.

Primary pre-ejaculation- Upbringing, trauma and conditioning

PE has been segmented as primary and secondary premature ejaculation. Primary type takes place when you develop this condition right from the time you became active sexually. Primary PE also termed as lifelong PE unlike that of the temporary one is caused rarely by physical conditions. The following psychological factors may cause this situation.

Conditioning: Experts are of the belief that your early sexual experiences and acts are likely to condition and influence your future sexual activities. If you have conditioned as a teenager to ejaculate quickly to avoid getting caught on masturbating or having sex, then breaking this habit can be real tough.

Trauma: In case, at a very young age, if you had experienced some traumatic sexual activity, then throughout your life, you are likely to suffer due to sexual anxiety. Traumatic experiences might vary from serious issues like getting abused sexually or something mild like getting caught while performing masturbation.

Upbringing: In case you experienced repressive upbringing with regards to sex, then while having sex, you can find it tough to relax. You might feel that sexual activity is wrong or sinful. Excessive sexual inhibitions can cause pre-ejaculation.

Secondary PE: Physical and Psychological causes

If upon becoming sexually active for the first time, you experience normal ejaculation and suddenly develop such condition, then second pre-ejaculation occurs. Its causes are rather linked with both psychological and physical factors. Physiological factors that are experienced commonly include unresolved issues like sexual or emotional problems between both the partners and other conflicts arising in the relationship, depression, stress and performance anxiety, especially you are in a new relationship. Secondary pre-ejaculation may be caused due to physical causes and include medical conditions like diabetes, multiple sclerosis, prostate issues, hypertension, hypothyroidism and alcoholism.

Delayed ejaculation

Several psychological and physical factors may delay ejaculation. Few of the known psychological causes include trauma, conditioning, stress, depression, repressive upbringing and relationship issues, which are similar to that of pre-ejaculation. The possibilities of premature ejaculation are only heightened due to physical causes like multiple sclerosis, diabetes, injury to spinal cord, and bladder or prostate surgery. There are few medications, which when taken might cause delayed ejaculation. Such medications may include recreational drugs, hypertension drugs and antidepressants. Pre-ejaculation is also caused due excessive alcohol consumption.

Retrograde ejaculation

Injuries caused to the nerves or muscles surrounding the bladder region may cause retrograde ejaculation issues. Semen is forced through the urethra during normal ejaculation, which they get blocked the muscles surrounding it from entering the bladder. In case for some reason, the muscles or bladder nerves get damaged, then the semen is likely to enter the bladder rather than the urethra. Retrograde ejaculation might take place due to medical conditions like diabetes, multiple sclerosis, prostate or bladder surgery or taking medications like alpha blockers to treat and cure high blood pressure.
