Vaginismus: Know its types and causes

Vaginal muscles in some women persistently or involuntary contract as they try to attempt vaginal penetration, termed as vaginismus. Contractions may make it quite painful or prevent satisfactory sexual intercourse.

It occurs:

  • Vaginal area of the woman is touched
  • Tampon insertion
  • As penetration is attempted

It may prevent penetration, but does not interfere in sexual arousal.

No cause is found for contractions with gentle pelvic evaluation. This condition does not however, contribute towards development of any physical abnormality.

Both females and males may contract sexual dysfunction, which can be treated. You do not have to be ashamed of it. But, such disorders might interfere with life quality and relationship.

The number of women having contracted vaginismus is not known even by the experts. However, this condition is termed to be uncommon.

Types  of Vaginismus

This ailment is of two types:

  • Primary: It is when there is no achievement of vaginal penetration.
  • Secondary: It is when vaginal penetration has been achieved once, however, no longer possible, due to various factors like radiation, trauma or gynecologic surgery.

Vagisnismus development might take place among some women after menopause. There is found lack of elasticity and vaginal lubrication, due to sharp drop of estrogen levels, thus making intercourse to seem painful, impossible and stressful, thus leading to causing vaginismus.

Causes of Vaginismus

For vaginismus to take place there is not always present a valid reason. But this condition is said to be linked to trauma, past sexual abuse, emotional factors or past painful intercourse.  No direct cause however, is found in few cases.

For further diagnosis of this ailment, physical exam is conducted by the doctor and sexual and medical history known about the patient. Such history can provide adequate and valid clues to identifying the underlying causes for contractions to take place.
