Erectile Dysfunction and Ayurvedic Treatment

Erectile dysfunction causes difficulty to maintain an erection in people. Ayurvedic doctors use plants to treat ED over 3 millennia.

There are some clinical trials to support ayurvedic treatments for Erectile dysfunction.

Ayurvedic Treatment

Ayurvedic medicine uses several herbal medicines. Ayurveda originated in India a thousand year ago. It still serves an essential part in Indian healthcare systems.

Ayurvedic practitioners use herbal medicines, diet, meditation, exercise, physical therapy and breathing exercises. Ayurvedic treatments cleanse and restore the balance of body, mind, and spirit.

Practitioners pass the practices of Ayurvedic medicine verbally, also there are few written documents available.

As per the Ayurvedic literature, the combination of air, space, water, earth and fire makes up every person. These universal elements form energies like pitta dosha, vata dosha, and kapha dosha.

If a person is unwell, their doshas and energies become unbalanced. The ayurvedic practitioners can treat the condition by rebalancing the doshas.

Erectile Dysfunction has several factors and causes contributing to the ED symptoms in a person. When traditional healers and doctors treat erectile dysfunction, they use treatments to act on several factors of sexual dysfunction.

Ashwagandha

Ayurvedic practitioners use Withania somnifera (Ashwagandha/Indian ginseng) for treating psychogenic ED. People having psychogenic male erectile disorder have difficulty in maintaining the erection due to:

  • Sexual anxiety
  • Concerns on sexual performance
  • Fear of failure
  • Decreased sexual pleasure and excitement

In the clinical study of 2011, 86 of males took placebo or Ashwagandha root powder for 60 days. Researchers studied Ashwagandha, as the practitioners use it to manage other psychosomatic conditions.

Researchers found no difference between the placebo and the effectiveness of Ashwagandha.

Another study was taken after 3 years, to study the effectiveness of Ashwagandha and ED. The ashwagandha didn’t improve the sexual function more than placebo.

Vajikarana Therapy

Vajikarana therapy can revitalize the body’s elements and restore health, as believed by practitioners. The followers of Ayurveda believe that these formulation can enhance the sexual function and improve the reproductive system by acting on the limbic system and hypothalamus of the brain.

Few people believe Vajikarana therapy can lower anxiety and increase reproductive hormones. But studies on these treatments lack scientific accuracy.

Vajikarana therapy includes over a hundred different formulas and ingredients. Some Vajikarana preparations are:

  • vrihani
  • gutikavajikaranam
  • gutikavrishya
  • shashtikadi
  • ghritamupatyakari
  • gutika medadi yog
  • Curculigo orchioides
  • Chlorophytum borivilianum
  • Asparagus racemosus

Rats that are treated with the extracts of Asparagus racemosus, Chlorophytum borivilianum and Curculigo orchioides exhibited enhanced erections.

Pedalium murex was the Vajikarana formulation used in another study of rats. They received the viagra, herbal extract or placebo and then researchers analyzed their sexual behavior.

Rats who received the herbal extract had enhanced sexual behavior than the placebo group.

Researchers haven’t yet confirmed the use of herbs in treating erectile dysfunction in humans.

Cinnamomum cassia

Researchers from Turkey used cinnamon (cinnamomum cassia) essential oil on the erectile tissue from rats and humans. It showed that cinnamon essential oil cinnamaldehyde relaxes the erectile tissue on rats and humans.

But more studies needed to check on humans and rats before recommending this spice. It is recommended not to swallow any of the essential oil. But instead inhale the oil or apply it to the skin.
