Vulvodynia – Vaginal problems affecting sex life

Burning and pain experienced in the vaginal region can be severe, not allowing you to sit comfortably, have intercourse or wear fitted clothing. This is the issue faced by women suffering from vulvodynia and unfortunately, no quick fix solution is present. Many are found to suffer for several years prior to getting the most appropriate treatment or relief.

The exact cause of vulvodynia is not known by doctors. However, some possible contributors might include injury caused to nerves within the vuva, muscle spasms in the pelvic floor and hypersensitivity to Candida. VVS (vulvar vestibuiltis syndrome) is considered to be a common type of vulvodynia, affecting tiny glands located at the bottom and top of vaginal opening.

Tricyclic antidepressants are being provided to patients for years to block the pain receptors present in the vulva, along with anticonvulsants, anesthetics, topical estrogen creams including surgery. However, the latest, less invasive treatments have been working miracles.

To restore sexual function and curb pain, Kellogg provides treatment to some patients a specially compounded ointment like the Capsaicin cream, an active ingredient present in chili peppers. On contact, some discomfort might be caused, however is likely to reduce symptoms dramatically.

If Candida hypersensitivity flares the woman’s condition then even slight imbalance is likely to cause burning and itching. In such a case, the symptoms can be alleviated by providing oral antifungal medication in weekly dosages for several weeks / months.

Patients developing secondary condition termed lichen dermatoses – a skin condition in vulva region might cause severe tissue along with/or scar tissue – topical steroid mix with some tiny estrogen cream is sure to heal damage caused to vulvar tissue and reduce the symptoms.

Another crucial treatment recommended to some patients is physical therapy by highly trained specialists. These therapists rectify misalignments, work towards loosening the muscles which becomes painfully tight and strengthens the pelvic floors (muscle layers that stretch between legs and supporting the ovaries, uterus, bladder and the organs), thereby reducing pain significantly.
