Thyroid Disease & Sexual Dysfunction in Women and Men

The prevalence of sexual dysfunction in women and men having hypothyroidism is unknown due to less number of studies. Various studies have shown that men with hypothyroidism have some sort of sexual dysfunction which includes premature ejaculation, hypoactive desire, erectile dysfunction and delayed ejaculation.

A small study found nine out of fourteen men presenting hypothyroidism have some kind of sexual dysfunction. In another study, 63% of hypothyroid patients had erectile dysfunction if compared with 34% of healthy individuals.

Men gets disruption in the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis if having hypothyroidism and this reduces the circulation of sex-hormone levels along with free and total testerone. Other mechanisms are hypothesized, but the true mechanism is still unknown.

Few studies in women evaluated the prevalence of female’s sexual dysfunction related to hypothyroidism. Most recent studies show high as 46% in women with hypothyroidism and having concomitant sexual dysfunction. Women exhibit menstrual disturbances nearly 25% to 70% those having hypothyroidism.

The recent study in women with thyroid disease were evaluated and those having clinical hypothyroidism showed higher prevalence of FSD, that involves decreased arousal, desire and lubrication as compared with healthy individuals. Incidence of hypothyroidism must be noted, it peaks at the menopause and these symptoms can overlap with perimenopause and hypothyroidism.

Men having hyperthyroidism will have concomitant sexual dysfunction ranging from 48% to 77% in patients. Male’s common sexual symptom related to hyperthyroidism is ejaculatory dysfunction. In a large European Male Study, there was an inverse relationship with thyroid-stimulating hormone levels and Erectile dysfunction prevalence. These findings got confirmed with a multivariate analysis adjusted for confounding variables like body mass index. Whereas, in women, various studies show hyperthyroidism can be a driver of FSD.

Women and men included in these studies are usually under 40 years. Thyroid Disease are relevant etiology to sexual dysfunction in young people. Plus, correcting these thyroid dysfunction in women or men causes positive effects in sexual dysfunction.
