A blood test is required to diagnose syphilis condition, with inclusion of lesion examination. After infection has manifested itself, body's defense mechanism generates anti-bodies to fight this infection. This anti-body presence is detected via affordable blood test. The presence of anti-bodies may not pinpoint the infection period, because they may be visible in blood for few months or many years. Hence, a single blood test cannot be used to find out since how long is the patient suffering from syphilis. This makes it important for a pregnant woman to undergo this test, so that she does not give this disease to baby in womb.
When the condition is diagnosed in early stages, antibiotics are the first option to get rid of it. Penicillin shot is very effective in curing the disease in its early stages. Even at a later stage, multiple doses of penicillin works fine. This disease is threatening only in its third stage of advancement. At this stage this disease has potential to harm nervous system and heart.
It is good to inform the doctor if you have previous history of allergy towards penicillin. You may then be advised doxycycline or azithromycin. Every treatment is coupled with regular blood tests, to check the progress. These tests may be recommended until an year after the treatment.
People undergoing treatment for syphilis, should avoid all types of sexual contacts. A new partner must not be approached, at least until sores heal. Getting their sexual partner notified and tested for this disease is a good practice. This way they can be treated at much earlier stages. Local health authorities offer help when it comes to notifying this to their existing partner.
Any druggist advertising over-thecounter pills or medicines for this disease should not be trusted, as it is dangerous to proceed without health practitioner's guidance. Also, home remedies cannot cure it.
It is good to use latex condoms during sex. It is more important to use them when one is not into long term monogamous sexual relationship. But, condoms cannot provide hundred percent protection, as sores can occur on areas uncovered by condoms.
Make it a practice to urinate and wash after sex. This prevents many STDs besides syphilis.
