Semen Without Sperm: What Causes Azoospermia?

The absence of sperm in men’s semen leads to azoospermia. This happens 1% in men and 15% of infertile men. There are no such symptoms for you to notice, but if your partner isn’t getting pregnant, this might be the cause.

Main Causes Are:

The problem can be your testicles that can’t make sperm or stopping the sperm from getting out of the body. There comes three types of azoospermia:

Pretesticular azoospermia – Testicles are normal, but your body can’t make sperm. This happens due to low hormone levels or after chemotherapy. This kind is pretty rare.

Testicular azoospermia – Damage in your testicles can’t make sperm normally. This happens due to a groin injury, infection in the reproductive tract like arthritis and epididymitis, childhood illness like viral orchitis that causes swelling in one or both testicles, genetic conditions like Klinefelter’s syndrome, cancer or treatments like radiation.

Post-testicular azoospermia – Testicles can make normal sperm, but they won’t get out due to the blockage in tubes that carry from testicles to the penis, known as obstructive azoospermia, in retrograde ejaculation the semen goes inside the bladder instead of the penis on an orgasm and also due to vasectomy.

How Can You Know If You Have Azoospermia?

When you’re trying to get your partner pregnant but couldn’t, then your doctor can check for this condition.

You have to give semen samples and the lab will examine them with a high-powered microscope. If the results have no sperm in semen, then you have azoospermia. The doctor can figure out what causes the problem. They’ll ask your medical history, do a physical examination and test the blood to measure the hormone levels.

When your hormone levels are normal, the doctor orders a transrectal or scrotal ultrasound to look for an obstruction. The MRI can confirm the diagnosis. Surgery is the one way to find the obstruction in a few cases. When you don’t have any blockage, genetic tests can find out the problem of your genes.
