Female Infertility Treatment

Women carry limited number of eggs and with the progressing reproductive years, the eggs lacks in quality and number. This decreases the chances of having baby by 3%-5% after the age of 30. The reduction in fertility is found to extend after the age of 40.
Major Causes of Female Infertility:
- Damage or blockage to fallopian tubes: The fallopian tube that carries egg, when damaged or blocked prevents the contact between the egg and the sperm. The fallopian tube may also get damaged due to Pelvic infections, endometriosis, Sexually Transmitted Infections and pelvic surgeries.
- Hormonal causes: Some women encounter ovulation problems. When the synchronized hormonal changes responsible for releasing egg from ovary and thickening of endometrium (lining of the uterus) for preparing the fertilized egg does not occur it indicates ovulation problem. This is detected using ovulation predictor kits, basal body temperature charts and blood tests for detecting hormonal levels. Follicular study or Ovulation study tests are done for checking follicle size and for predicting healthy and normal ovulation.
- Cervical causes: Some women may face a cervical condition that hinders the passage of the sperm through the cervical canal which may be a result of prior surgical procedure or abnormal production of mucus.
- Uterine causes: Abnormality in the anatomy of uterus like presence of fibroids and polyps.
- Unexplained infertility: Currently available methods for investigating and determining the infertility causes fail in approximately 20% of couples.
- Failure to Ovulate: The common reason why women are unable to conceive is the Ovulation disorders and fortunately these cases can be treated successfully by Herbo-Mineral Ayurveda Medicines.
The causes of ovulation failure can be categorized as follows:
- Hormonal Problems
It is the common cause of ovulation failure. Ovulation process completely depends upon the hormonal balance and their successful interactions. Any disruption in this process causes ovulation failure. The main reasons for this disruption are
- Failure to produce mature eggs:
In about 50% of anovulation cases, abnormal follicles are produced by the ovaries inhibiting the egg maturation. With immature eggs the ovulation chances become less leading to non- fertilization. Polycystic ovary syndrome PCOS, is the common disorder responsible for this problem. The symptoms are hirsutism, amenorrhoea, anovulation and infertility and this syndrome is characterized by a reduced production of hormone like FSH, and normal or increased levels of LH, testosterone and oestrogen. As per recent hypothesis is; only partial development of ovarian follicles is associated with the suppression of FSH and ultrasound scanning can help detect the follicular cysts. The affected ovary becomes double its normal size due to smooth white capsule in its surrounding.
- Scarred Ovaries
Any kind of physical damage to the ovaries may result in anovulation. Extensive or multiple surgeries for repeated ovarian cysts can cause scars or damage to ovary capsules. To such an extent that follicles can no longer mature properly thereby leading to anovulation. Infection may also impact ovulation.
- Premature Menopause
This is an unexplainable cause of ovulation failure. In some women menopause begins before expected age leading to depletion of natural egg supply. It is majorly found in extremely athletic women with low body weight and prone to extensive exercise. Genetic possibility for this condition cannot be ruled out.
- Follicle Problems
The "unruptured follicle syndrome" occurs in women who produce a normal follicle, that carry an egg inside but they fail to rupture every month. This inhibits proper ovulation.
Causes of Poorly Functioning Fallopian Tubes
Approximately 25% of infertile couples are affected by Tubal disease which range from mild adhesions to complete tubal blockage and the main causes of this are:
- Infection
sexually transmitted bacteria and viruses cause inflammations resulting in scarring and damage. Hydrosalpnix is such a condition in which fallopian tube is occluded at both the ends and the tube is collected with fluid.
- Abdominal Diseases
Appendicitis and colitis, the common abdominal disease cause inflammation of the abdominal cavity that affect the fallopian tubes leading to scarring and blockage of tube.
- Previous Surgeries
Pelvic or abdominal surgery is another cause of tubal disease and damage as it can result in adhesions which alter the tubes in such a way that it inhibits the eggs movement through it.
- Ectopic Pregnancy
It is a condition in which pregnancy occurs in the tube itself and may cause tubal damage with a potential threat to life.
- Congenital Defects
Women born with tubal abnormalities are associated with irregularities in uterus.
Endometriosis
Endometriosis diminishes fecundity (chance of getting pregnant) by 12 to 36% in women.This particular kind of condition may be recognized by an extreme growth in the uterus
lining. This is known as the endometrium. It is important to note that besides the uterus, excessive growth may also take place in other areas in the abdomen, which include the ovaries, the fallopian tubes or the peritoneum of the pelvis and so on and so forth. The physician will be able to view the parts of the abdomen like the fallopian tubes, uterus and so on with the help of the diagnostic laparoscopy. The symptoms related to endometriosis are heavy, painful and long menstrual periods, urinary urgency, premenstrual spotting and rectal bleeding and sometimes there may be no symptoms at all. The long term cumulative pregnancy rates are normal in patients with minimal endometriosis and normal anatomy.
Additional Factors
- Other variables that may cause infertility in women:
- Abnormal uterus is the cause of female infertility in about 10% of cases. Conditions like fibroid, polyps and adenomyosis lead to obstruction of Fallopian tubes and the uterus.
- Congenital abnormalities like septate uterus lead to recurrent miscarriages or conceiving inability.
- Infertility problems due to females cervical mucus is been seen in approximately 3% of couples. The mucus should have certain consistency and should be available in proper amounts so that sperm can easily swim through it. Hormone imbalance is common reason for abnormal cervical mucus, which is either due to too little estrogen or too much of progesterone level.
- Behavioral Factors:
Lifestyle factors and certain personal habits impact health in some or the other way as it may even limit a couple from conceiving. However, these factors can be regulated to increase the conceiving ability and overall health of an individual.
- Diet and Exercise
Proper diet and appropriate exercise are important for optimal reproductive functioning. Women who are overweight or underweight find problem in conceiving.
- Smoking
Smoking lowers the sperm counts in men whereas in women there is risk of miscarriage, premature birth, and low-birth-weight babies and reduces the chance of conceiving either naturally or by IVF.
- Alcohol
Alcohol intake leads to birth defects of babies or even cause Foetal Alcohol Syndrome if alcohol levels is high in the mother’s blood. In men alcohol also affects sperm counts.
- Drugs
Anabolic steroids and drugs like marijuana effect sperm counts in men. Use of Cocaine in pregnant women leads to kidney problems and severe retardations in the baby . Use of recreational drugs should be avoided when pregnant and while trying for conceiving.
- Environmental and Occupational Factors:
The ability to conceive may be affected by exposure to various toxins or chemicals in the workplace or the surrounding environment. Substances that can cause mutations, birth defects, abortions, infertility or sterility are called reproductive toxins. Disorders of infertility, reproduction, spontaneous abortion, and teratogenesis are among the top ten work-related diseases in the world today.
Lack of proper Ovulation, or hormonal misbalance or tubal block is the reasons for infertility in healthy women.
