Syphilis is one of the most dangerous sexually transmitted diseases<\/strong> because, if left untreated, it can cause serious health problems like blindness, deafness, neurosyphilis (damage to the nervous system), and bone damage.<\/p>\n

Syphilis<\/strong> is usually caused by a bacterial infection. It starts with a sore that doesn’t hurt, usually on your genitalia, rectum, or mouth. After the first infection, the syphilis bacteria can lie dormant in your body for a long time before becoming active again. Syphilis can be cured if caught early. Syphilis can also be passed from a mother to her unborn child when the mother is giving birth, if she has the disease.<\/p>\n

Causes Of Syphilis<\/h2>\n

The bacterium Treponema pallidum is what causes syphilis.<\/strong> Most people get HIV through sexual contact with an infected person or through small cuts or scrapes on their skin or mucous membranes. Syphilis can sometimes be passed on through kissing or when an infected mother is pregnant or giving birth. Syphilis can’t be passed on by sharing clothes or eating tools or by touching doorknobs, pools, or hot tubs.<\/p>\n

Clinical Features<\/h2>\n

Syphilis develops in stages, and symptoms vary with each stage. Stages can be \u2013<\/strong><\/p>\n

Primary Syphilis<\/h4>\n

At the place where the bacteria got into your body, a small sore called a chancre forms. Most people who have syphilis only get one chancre, but some get more than one. The chancre is usually painless and may show up three weeks after exposure. It may heal on its own in three to six weeks.<\/p>\n

Secondary Syphilis<\/h4>\n

After a few weeks, a rash starts on your trunk and spreads to your whole body, including the palms of your hands and the bottoms of your feet. You might also get sores in your mouth or genital area that look like warts. Some people get muscle aches, a fever, a sore throat, and swollen lymph nodes, which may go away in a few weeks.<\/p>\n

Latent Syphilis<\/h4>\n

If you are treated for syphilis with no symptoms, the disease moves from the secondary stage to the hidden (latent) stage. The latent stage can last for years and may lead to the third (tertiary) stage.<\/p>\n

Tertiary Syphilis<\/h4>\n

People with Syphilis who don’t get treatment may get late (tertiary) syphilis, which is a type of complication. At this stage, it can hurt your brain, heart, blood vessels, nerves, eyes, liver, bones, and joints.<\/p>\n

Congenital Syphilis<\/h4>\n

At the time of delivery, if the mother has syphilis, she can pass it to the baby through the placenta. Most people don’t have any signs of it, but some may get a rash on their palms and soles. Later, it can cause hearing loss, crooked teeth, and a saddle nose.<\/p>\n

Neurosyphilis<\/h4>\n
