The Parasitic and Viral STIs – Know Your Facts

Every year, more than 20 million cases of STI infection are reported in the U.S. While the infection triggered due to bacteria entering the system is a common concern some viral and parasites may also lead to severe consequences when they enter the system. The virus or the parasites may not need a sexual encounter to enter the body. Skin contact or a contact with the used towels or linens is enough for the parasites and virus to enter the body.

The knowledge about the infections helps one take necessary precautions and stay clear from the two most uncommon but, severe types of STIs. It is one’s duty to be informed about the types of infections and the mode through which they spread in order to take right kind of precautions. A study observes that about a million people are affected with genital warts in the U.S. Detailed below are the viruses and parasites which may affect the overall health in a person.

Parasitic STIs:

The two common conditions which occur due to parasites entering our system include, syphilis and trichomoniasis. Of the two, people are more informed about syphilis although its incidence is restricted to about 56,000 cases each year. The unfamiliar “Trich” is known to infect at least 5 million Americans each year. The greater incidence of the Trich cases is due to the fact that, people are not informed about this condition. This disease is difficult to diagnose as after it advances to a certain stage, HIV and Herpes virus are also found in the system. Trich is known to hamper the individual immune system defences and put a person more at risk to the viral and bacterial infections. Crabs is another single infectious parasite causing STI which spreads via contact (commonly through sexual contact). Scabies is another parasite which spreads via normal skin contact through the clothing, beds, etc. It is unlikely to be transmitted through a toilet seat.

Viral STIs:

The two common infections spread by the virus entering one’s system are HIV and HPV. Another virus called HSV may also cause genital herpes. The HPV virus after entering the system, morphs and hides within the immune cells and causes recurrent infections whenever the immunity of a person is weakened. Anti-viral medications prescribed by the doctor must be used whenever one is diagnosed with a Viral STI. The statistics depicted by the CDC for adults who are infected with HSV stands at 80% of the total U.S., population.
