Male Hormonal Imbalance – Is it Linked to Low Sex Drive

The modern man is a witness to evolving role patterns for men and women. The constant pressure to multitask different roles and tasks has taken a toll on the metropolitan man. Though uncommon, cases of sexual disinterest in men are rising gradually.

A random disinterest in sex or disinterest caused when the man is nursing an injury are not a serious concern. They are temporary symptoms which go away as the injury heals or the factor causing this disinterest vanishes. When the disinterest is persistent and the man refuses to participate in any form of sexual activity, it is time to seek medical attention. This condition is sometimes called as the hypoactive disorder of the sexual desire. It is observed in both the genders and is primarily caused due to poor hormone levels. A new study regarding sexual disorders in men observed that out of 13,000 odd cases, about 2.45% cases observed to have this disorder of sexual desire.

What causes the Hypoactive Disorder?

Every disease is caused due to two main reasons, physical and psychological. The physical reasons can be triggered again due to numerous causes. The psychological causes include the emotional upheavals due to various physical reasons.

Physical Injury or Reasons

Any injury or cause which brings about physical changes in hormones that work upon the emotional well being of a man are known to cause this disorder of the sexual desire. When the testosterone levels drop in men, the sexual desire or libido takes a back seat. Any form of drug abuse which affects the functioning of hormones, medication for treating depression, etc., reduce the testosterone levels in a body. Abnormality in thyroid levels, high cholesterol, obesity, etc., are few other common reasons which deteriorate the hormone levels.

Psychological or the Emotional Well being

Factors like daily stress, anxiety, depression, lowered self-esteem are termed psychological because they work on an emotional level of the person. Constant emotional upheaval may bring about physical manifestations of disease and hence trigger physical changes like the imbalance in hormone levels.

To break this constant cycle of disease, depression and trigger cycle a person should work towards removing all physical reasons that produce such a change in the hormone levels. Consuming healthy food, taking up regular exercise and managing stress effectively helps in removing the primary factors that cause a disinterest in sexual activity. If the disorder is chronic, seeking timely expert diagnose is very important.
